Paola Skatepark: Malta’s First Professional Skatepark

In a momentous occasion for Malta’s action sports community, the Malta Street Sport Association (MSSA) proudly announces the initiation of construction for the highly anticipated Paola Skatepark. This milestone project, positioned as Malta’s first professional skatepark, reflects the dedicated efforts of MSSA, in collaboration with renowned skatepark builders Mind Work Ramps and the Malta Skateboarding Association (MSA). The journey began in February 2023.

Months of meticulous planning and collaboration between MSSA, Mind Work Ramps, MSA, Local Contractor LBV Ltd, architect Jesmond Mugliett and the Paola Local Council have culminated in the formal signing of a contract this week. The construction is set to commence in January 2024, with completion anticipated by March 2024.

The Paola Skatepark will be a dynamic hub for BMX, Skateboarding, Rollerblading, and Scooter enthusiasts, designed to cater to the diverse needs of Malta’s vibrant action sports community. Significantly, MSSA spearheaded the project, with invaluable contributions from MSA, underscoring their commitment to fostering community engagement and sports progression. Designed with inclusivity in mind, the skatepark welcomes beginners and ensures progression for more advanced athletes. MSSA and MSA are committed to creating an environment where individuals of all skill levels can enjoy the thrill of action sports, promoting not just physical activity but also personal growth and community connection.

Moreover, the strategic location of the Paola Skatepark, in close proximity to Mcast, is set to benefit students practicing these sports. With the skatepark just 2 minutes away from Mcast, these students will be more encouraged to commute to school using their BMX or skateboard. This initiative not only encourages alternative means of transportation but also complements the ramps set up at Mcast by MSSA in recent years.

In addition to cutting-edge facilities, the skatepark will feature a dedicated kids’ area and an open space, providing a holistic recreational environment. An unexpected historical gem—a World War II bomb shelter discovered during excavations—adds a unique blend of modern recreation and historical significance to the Paola Skatepark.

“We are thrilled to witness the realization of Paola Skatepark, a testament to MSSA’s dedication to creating spaces that transcend traditional norms and offer unique recreational opportunities. The collaborative efforts with MSA have been instrumental in shaping a facility that will leave a lasting impact on Malta’s action sports community,” remarked Karl Naja, President at MSSA.

The support of Paola Mayor Dominic Grima and The Paola Local Council, together with the Local Contractor LBV Ltd and architect Jesmond Mugliett has been instrumental in propelling this project forward. Paola Skatepark is not just a facility; it’s a commitment to providing the youth with a space for recreation, personal growth, and a healthier lifestyle.

As MSSA and MSA navigate the final stages of construction, the community is invited to follow the journey on social media @mssamalta and visit www.mssa.mt for regular updates. Paola Skatepark promises to be a dynamic space that will leave a lasting impact on the local community, thanks to the collaborative spirit and dedication of MSSA, MSA, and their partners.
